Gee’s story, “We always referred to it as the Kesselring atlas as the signature looked a bit like his name and he was in that area about that time. We stayed with the lady who gave it to us, who had been the local midwife and I think she said that the area commander had commandeered their apartments in the centre of San Vincenzo and they had to live with relatives during the occupation. The atlas was left in the flat when they made a hasty retreat. Neither she nor her husband spoke English so all this was through Ron Baker the friend we went with who did speak quite good Italian.”
Jack remembered that the lady that he, Gee, Ron & Jock stayed with was a midwife & that her husband made car battery terminals on the gas stove for Fiat. He also recalled that the husband drove a canvas top ex military Austin.
